The Ministry of ICT, Innovation and Youth Affairs, through the Information and Communication Technology Authority (ICTA) on Saturday, commissioned the construction of Kenya’s first software factory in Mulot, Bomet County. Hon. Joe Mucheru, Cabinet Secretary for ICT, Innovation & Youth Affairs, officiated the ceremony.

The development of the software industry in Bomet County will support the goals outlined in the National Digital Master Plan, which emphasized the creation of two software industries across the nation. Bomet County, particularly the Mulot area, has been highlighted as a potential source of software engineers who, if properly utilized, might lead to the creation of software businesses for both the nation and the region.

Mucheru mentioned that the facility will make sure that ICT skills are developed in line with new technological trends for economic progress. He emphasized how important digitization is for accelerating all socioeconomic progress. As a result, this factory will be essential in fostering innovation to address Kenya’s future issues.

Kenya’s National Digital Master Plan, which CS Mucheru unveiled in April 2022 and spans the years 2022 to 2032, unifies all government ICT projects under a unified framework. The Plan called for the creation of two software sectors, through which the government would hire over 100,000 software engineers to create applications for both the local market and the international market.

Maureen Mbaka the CAS for the Ministry, Jerome Ochieng the ICT Principal Secretary, Dr. Kipronoh Rono the Ag. CEO of ICTA, ICTA board members, and Bomet County Governor Dr. Hillary Barchok among other officials attended. Under the terms of a public-private partnership, the factory is being built with the assistance of investors from the private sector. In order to promote film production and provide training in digital literacy, the government has set up 1450 village digital centers.
