Government Offers Incentives To Private Schools

After the government’s new criteria for raising student enrolment were released by Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha, private school owners can now anticipate making a lot of money. All standalone private secondary schools that will be subsidiaries of existing institutions will be registered and allowed to enroll pupils, according to Magoha’s rules for junior secondary school (JSS) admissions. The only requirement for these private schools is the availability of a fully equipped laboratory and availability of classrooms.

Parents who admit their children to private junior secondary are still expected to pay fees despite government incentives. The government appears to have offered incentives to encourage private investors and finance classroom construction in private schools. This offer comes because the government can not be able to finish the construction of the required classrooms by January 2023 for the admission of 2.5 million learners.

The allocation of Sh8 billion by the government for the building of classrooms in public schools was made in an effort to raise hopes for the changeover to competency-based education. In spite of spending billions, the government was unable to complete the target classroom goal in time for the transition of 1.2 million children to junior secondary school in 2023.

The total number of extra classes required by January to accommodate all students anticipated to transition is 20,000. On the other hand, just 7,000 new classrooms have been created nationwide to date, creating a massive shortage of classrooms. This is the reason why private investors are encouraged to invest.

In the current curriculum, the government allocates learners to joining form one in public schools only. In this new CBC curriculum, the cabinet secretary for education said that the government will allow students, In collaboration with their parents, and instructors to enroll in either a public or private secondary school for their JSS education.
