The expressway is a 27 kilometers road located at the heart of Nairobi. The road stretches from Mlolongo through Uhuru Highway and Nairobi’s CBD to the James Gichuru Road junction in Westlands. The road’s entire construction cost was about Ksh73.5 billion. It was funded and constructed by China Road and Bridge Corporation under a public-private partnership.

It is anticipated to reduce travel times from the south to the west of Nairobi, reduce traffic jams in the CBD, create local employment, and boost the economy. A total of 10,000 people have already registered to use the expressway, with an average of about 800 people registering every day.

How many toll stations are on the Nairobi Expressway?

There are a total of 11 toll stations and 27 toll plazas. The difference between the two is that the plaza comprises the entrance and exit routes while the stations encompass the two. The toll stations include Nairobi West, Museum Hill, Westland’s, Haile Selassie, Capital Center, Southern Bypass, Eastern Bypass, JKIA (Two plazas; entry and exit point), Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), Mlolongo, Nairobi East.

How do I register for Nairobi Expressway?

There are two ways one can register for the Nairobi expressway, which are; physically going to the center or applying online.

To register physically:

  • Go to the Nairobi Expressway Service Center on Mombasa Road, opposite General Motors, and complete the ETC Service Subscriber Registration form.
  • register using an ID number or a valid passport number and logbook.
  • A service charge of Ksh1,000 inclusive of VAT is paid at this stage.

Registration for the card online

  • Visit Nairobiexpressway.ke to create an account.
  • Enter your information and choose a password.
  • Specify whether you are registering as an individual or corporate.
  • Accept the terms and conditions.
  • Click “submit” after verifying that you have entered the correct data.
  • You will receive a verification message on your phone.
  • Enter the verification code, then press “Submit.”
  • Choose a card between Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) or Manual Toll Collection (MTC) then submit.
  • Finally, download and print out the application, and take it to the Nairobi Expressway Command Center.

Nairobi Expressway payment method

There are three ways to pay which are; cash, the Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) service, and the Manual Toll Collection (MTC) card. The ETC enables toll points to be electronically deducted in order to provide a continuous road service while an MTC card can be loaded with toll points paid at toll stations.

For you to get the Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) service you need to:

1. Visit the service center at Nairobi Expressway Plaza.
2. Fill in the Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) service subscriber registration form.
3. Present the required documents (ID/Passport and Logbook).
4. Pay a service charge of Ksh.1,000.
5. Install and activate your OBU device that will be mounted on your vehicle.
6. Purchase toll points.
7. Load toll points into your OBU device.
8. The toll is valid for one year and the minimum point is Ksh2,000.

To get a Manual Toll Collection (MTC) card you need to:

1. Visit the service center at Nairobi Expressway Plaza.
2. Fill in the MTC Card Subscriber Registration form.
3. Present the required documents ID/Passport and Logbook.
4. Pay a service charge of Ksh.300.
5. Purchase toll points and activate your MTC card.
6. Load toll points into your MTC card.
7. The toll is valid for one year and the minimum point is Ksh1,000.

Can you pay expressway with M-Pesa?

M-Pesa payments are not accepted, this is according to the Expressway’s operators. Only cash and electronic card payments will be accepted in an effort to reduce traffic congestion at tolling stations brought on by the validation of mobile transactions.
According to a spokeswoman for Moja Expressway,

“M-Pesa payment might cause traffic congestion at tolling locations. It is still under discussion. Future generations will still have access to it”.

How do I check my expressway balance?

Create a personal account, retrieve your password, and log in at https://customer.nairobiexpressway.ke. If you have already registered for an ETC service or MTC card at the service center, your account will immediately show the services and cards you currently have, along with your account balance, after you log in.

Where does Nairobi Expressway start and end?

The road starts at Mlolongo and links the South road of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, it continues along the existing roadway to the Likoni Road Junction, it travels 13.5 kilometers north from the Likoni Road connection to the James Gichuru Road junction. From there the road continues to Rironi, along the Nairobi–Nakuru Road, where it ends.

Are matatus allowed on the expressway?

There was a temporary prohibition on matatus to using the expressway.
According to a report from the highway spokesperson,” Every Sacco has the responsibility of making sure that all the vehicles are safe to drive and that they pass the NTSA inspection before they are permitted to use the highway, They must pass the inspection since the Sacco will be responsible for paying for any damage that occurs along the Expressway he said.”
