Willis Raburu, the Citizen Tv host, admits to having a gastric bypass procedure to lose weight. Gastric bypass is a surgery that helps people lose weight by changing how their stomach and small intestine handle the amount of food they eat, it is a more lasting way of managing weight. In an interview with YouTuber Eve Mungai on Tuesday, August 23, the ten over ten presenter said that he had tried working out and going to the gym in the past, but it had not been helpful.

This surgery is done in 3 days but takes almost a month to heal. The process was done at Nairobi Bariatric. According to him after the surgery, patients must be willing to make permanent changes to their lifestyle.

“I used to eat 6 to 8 chapatis or up to 8 pieces of fried chicken at a go but now I don’t think I can do one and a half chapatis,” he said.

The process was done in May and after the first month, his weight reduced from 164kgs to 150kgs. The surgery costs between Sh600K to Sh900K. I don’t regret my decision of undergoing the surgery, he said.

Why Willis Raburu decided to lose weight

According to the presenter, his body formed a pattern of shedding weight and gaining it back. By the time he opted to go for surgery, he was facing health risks.

“I respect people who persistently go to the gym, the gym is a lot of work. I had a good trainer but I would lose weight but I would regain that weight again very quickly. By the time I was going for the surgery I was not doing well I was 164kgs. I needed the surgery because my blood pressure and cholesterol were high and it was now a matter of taking care of my health because now I had a junior and also just for myself,” he said.

According to him, people have to love themselves enough to recognize when they need assistance.

“You have to love yourself enough to know that you need help and there is no shame in it by the way. Because people always attach such procedures to shame. It is expensive but the gains are evident. If you pay whatever you pay now and in the future let’s say if I was to get, a heart attack, the money I would pay in hospital just for three days to get proper care would be a lot,” he added.
