The CBC curriculum structure

CBC education system adopts a format of 2-6-6-3. Compared to the 8-4-4 system comprised of three levels: primary school, secondary school and tertiary education, CBC is also sectioned into 3 levels early years education, middle school education and senior school education. The three-level of education is divided into Pre-primary education

  • lower primary education
  • middle school education
  • upper primary education
  • lower secondary
  • senior school education

Early years education

Pre-primary level and lower primary are categorized under early years education. Pre-primary education takes a duration of two years, learners are taken through pp1 and pp2 then after finishing graduation is conducted to send students to the next level.

The students who graduated from the Pri-primary level are moved to lower primary. This level takes a duration of 3 years, every year students are transferred to a new class. The classes consist of grade 1, grade 2, and grade 3. After completing these grades the learners who are proceeding to the next level graduate to the next level.

Middle school education

Lower primary learners are ushered in middle school education. lower primary and upper primary education are grouped under middle school education. The lower primary takes a duration of 3 years, students study grade 4, grade 5 and grade 6. Every year students are tested to see their abilities before being moved to another level.

After 3 years in lower primary pupils graduates to lower secondary. in this level grade 7, grade 8 and grade 9 are taught, this level takes a duration of three years to complete. They then graduate to senior school.
Senior school education

Senior school education

The majority of senior education level students are between the ages of 15 and 17. At this level students are taken through grade 10, grade 11, and grade 12, the course lasts up to three years. In senior school, the student already concentrates on academic fields related to their areas of interest or strength.

From senior education learners graduates to higher education. this level consists of universities and colleges. this level takes at least 3 years, in this level students choose a course depending on their interests after completion of this level students graduate and go in search of work.

  1. Pre-primary level pp1 and pp2 study:
  • Environmental Activities
  • Language activities
  • Environmental activities
  • Mathematical activities
  • Hygiene and nutrition activities.

2. Lower primary grade 1, grade 2 and grade 3 study:

  • Religious Education Activities
  • English Language Activities
  • Mathematical Activities
  • Movement and Creative Activities
  • Hygiene and Nutrition Activities
  • Environmental Activities
  • Literacy
  • Indigenous Language Activities
  • Kiswahili Language Activities or sign language
  • Additional subjects such as ICT and Life skills.

3. Upper primary grade 4, grade 5 and grade 6 study:

  • Home Science
  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Social Studies
  • Creative Arts
  • Agriculture
  • Religious Education (CRE/IRE/HRE)
  • Science and Technology
  • Physical and Health Education
  • Kiswahili or Kenya Sign Language
  • Foreign Languages which will be optional
  • Life skills, ICT, Contemporary Issues, and pertinent and pastoral programs will be added as additional subjects.

4. Lower secondary grade 7, grade 8 and grade 9 study:

  • English
  • Social Studies
  • Integrated Science
  • Health Education
  • Mathematics
  • Life Skills Education
  • Agriculture
  • Religious Education
  • Business Studies
  • Sports and Physical Education
  • Pre-Technical and Pre-Career Education 8
  • Kiswahili or Kenyan Sign Language for the deaf
  • Arts, Computer Science, Kenyan Sign Language, Visual Arts, Indigenous Languages and Foreign Languages will be optional subjects where learners should choose one and a maximum of two.

5. Senior school grade 10, 11 and 12 studies:

  • Arts and Sports Science Pathway
  • The Social Sciences Pathway
  • The Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Pathway.
