When did CBC start in Kenya?
The system was launched in 2017, it was studied and developed by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD). This system is introduced to replace the 8-4-4 education cycle.
Why CBC was introduced in Kenya?
CBC education was introduced to help get understand students at a personal level, the system will focus on the ability of the student and develop relevant skills necessary for any activity happening. Compared to the 8-4-4 where it was much of teacher based system whereby the teacher was the center of education CBC will focus on the learners.
How is CBC different from 844?
- The biggest difference between CBC and 8-4-4 is, In contrast to 8:4:4, which requires passing specific tests in order to advance to the next level, CBC is skills-oriented, it allows students to specialize in areas of interest and fosters inventions and discoveries.
- 8-4-4 is teacher-based education while CBC is learners based.
- CBC learning years and levels are broken down into slots 2-6-6-3 which help reduce dropout while 8-4-4 levels are not well divided thus creating boredom to study.
What are the benefits of CBC in Kenya?
The CBC Curriculum has numerous advantages for both students, parents, and teachers. Some of the benefits include:
It is more focused on the learner rather than the teachers.
The system puts more emphasis on the learner as an individual than on the school’s general performance. The teachers are then able to understand the expectations of the students in terms of their strengths and weaknesses. This constant engagement between students and teachers helps develop positive relationships between each other thus making it easier for learners to be guided on how to improve their skills and careers.
It’s flexible
CBC is flexible whereby students do not have to sit in lecture rooms doing the same class work that they have already mastered, learners have the opportunity to demonstrate their little skills. Also, the system is not fixed to who enters the program, no matter the level a learner is he or she is allowed to take part in any program all that is required is experience and knowledge.
Encourages creativity and innovation
CBC frees students from being restricted to what is covered in the syllabus and encourages them to use their imaginations to explore new concepts and images before putting them into practice. The student’s ability to examine and identify distinct patterns allows them to come up with remedies that will help the situation.
The pressure on academic performance will be eased
The system keeps more focus on the specific skills of each individual student and the unique abilities of every student. There is no competition each learner is assessed personally and their improvement recorded, each student works at their own pace.
Students engage in both theory and practical
The ability of the students to discern what they have learned in class from how practically they can use the skills outside of the classroom is examined. This allows the teachers to see each student’s potential and understand them. This curriculum helps the learner in conquering their deficiencies and improving their abilities.
Parental Participation
Unlike the previous system, CBC requires parents to take part in helping nature the kids. parents have a major role in giving students a conducive environment to do their studies and also helping them in doing research. When it comes to practicals parents are required to collaborate with the school and take part in providing necessary requirements required, with CBC parents tend to engage with learners more.
Learners are expanded to more opportunities
CBC offers learners a variety of learning alternatives to help them focus on identifying talents and potential exploration. By giving them access to equal educational possibilities, the system encourages students to adopt a positive attitude toward learning. The main reason for giving learners the freedom to pursue their interests is to reduce the number of school dropouts since students are allowed to do what they enjoy doing.
Embraces the use of technology in education
The system appreciates technology such that learners will have to study ICT as a subject. in grade 7,8,9 learners who love ICT have an opportunity to study computer science as a subject. Through this students will be able to solve technology problems easier and also help those who pursue it as a career.
