The Education Ministry has announced the dates for grade 6 students to choose junior secondary schools. learners will start choosing schools they wish to be placed coming next month. Students will choose schools online, the portal will be open from August 15 to August 30. A total of 1.27 million Grade 6 students will take the national exam on November 28 – 30. learners will be placed in registered private and public schools countrywide.

The registered private secondary schools will be available to students whose parents will manage to pay the tuition fees while public secondary schools that share a compound with public primary schools will use the primary school’s available classrooms as additional learning space.
Students will be admitted to a junior secondary school based on their performance in Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA). The exams will consist of 40% of the total score and 60% made up of school-based assessments in Grades 4 (20%), 5 (20%), and 6 (20%). A total of 1.27 million Grade 6 students are set to take the national exam from November 28 to 30.

According to the cabinet secretary for education George Magoha, a total of 2.51 million students will begin secondary school in January 2023. This huge number of students joining secondary schools consists of both those graduating from grade six and those who finished class 8. A total of 1.27 million grade six students will be joining the secondary school and 1.24 million from class 8. The move for students with special needs and disabilities pursuing the Stage-Based Pathway will be based on performance in the Kenya Intermediate Level Education Assessment (KILEA). KNEC has already issued the rules for grade 6 exams.

KNEC Chief Executive Officer, David Njegere said Candidates will take a School-Based Assessment (SBA) exam in their home institutions, which will be graded by their teachers, after that, students will be allowed to register for the national exam and the evaluation results will be submitted to the portal. Each learner will be given an assessment number that they will use when taking the Kenya Inter-Mediate Level Education Assessment (KILEA). Students will be tested on five exams English, Mathematics, Integrated Science, Kiswahili, Creative Arts, and Social Studies.

Schools will be expected to give students the materials they need for the practical exams thus, schools are encouraged to upgrade their resources. Before the KNEC deadline, teachers will grade students’ performance and assign grades, which will then be published to the KILEA portal.
